Visiting the Miami Art Museum

The Miami Art Museum boasts a diverse collection of works, with a focus upon contemporary, Miami-based artists. The Museum is designed to promote intercultural exchange by emphasizing art drawn from the diverse heritages of the residents of Miami. This can be seen in the Abstract Expressionism of the Cuban artist Carlos Alfonzo. Alfonzo's works have religious themes, but these themes are elliptically expressed because of his style, which recalls that of Jackson Pollock's splatter paintings. For example, En Carne (In Flesh) and En Espiritu (In Spirit) are two large abstract paintings designed to represent these competing principles. The paintings have slightly more coherence than a Pollock, however, and there are clear images of nails, human limbs and arrows hidden in the cool swirls of color.

The arrows are a reference to the martyrdom of St. Sebastian. They are overpowering, disturbing, and beautiful all at the same time (Carlos Alfonzo, 2012, Miami Art Museum). They refer to the two, competing aspects of Christ -- flesh and spirit. The paintings look similar, reflecting the united aspects of this dual nature, even though they are distinct works themselves and could be appreciated as enclosed entities. When I read his biography on the Museum website, I later learned that Alfonzo had died of AIDS and that the paintings were composed after a trip to Italy while he was suffering with the disease (Carlos Alfonzo, 2012, Miami Art Museum).
Although most of the works in the Museum were unfamiliar to me, I did recognize some of the creations of Frank Stella. I had not heard his name before, but his large, geometric shapes recalled some of the styles of modern art I had encountered…
